Short term disability is awarded to employees of a company who have come to have a some sort of short term illness or reason they cannot be at work. Every state's short term disability policy is different, and must be looked into before claiming short term disability.

Short term disability is given to people who have suddenly gotten injured or ill outside of work. Because they are sick or injured, they should not have to go without income. A short term disability policy ensures that these workers will still be compensated during the time they are off of work.



A worker will not earn their full wages while they are off of work on a company's short term disability policy. There will only be a certain percentage of the wages paid out to the work while on disability. The coverage will begin within two weeks of the employee hurting himself or becoming sick. Companies usually provide a certain number of sick days to employees each year. Before a short term disability policy takes effect, a worker must use all of his or her sick days. If something serious is wrong with you, these sick days will never be enough time to recuperate and heal as long as needed. This is where a short term disability policy comes in.

Companies can pay for the short term disability policy by having the insurer pay for it or by having the employees pay for their short term disability out of their checks. By funding it the latter way, employees have a small amount taken out every check and the fund builds.

Most companies and businesses state in their short term disability policy that it is a requirement to have a note from a doctor in order to make a claim. Usually the short term disability policy is only available to employees that have been working for a company for a minimum of six months. The employees also must be full time employees.
